I wish I could get a sense of scale of the component... are you going as some sort of receptacle? An iPod dock or a SmartTrip reader, possibly? The connector looks kind of like a FDD controller plug -- are you perhaps letting people insert floppy disks into you? That could get ugly as the evening wears on.

It's a "love detector". The black box can have a finger inserted into it, reads bio-electrical impulses, and is used to drive the output of a display with several options:
* Cold Shoulder
* Not So Hot
* Lukewarm
* Getting Warmer
* On Fire
* Lothario
Well, I was going to guess Borg, but if it's not visible, I have no freaking idea. Unless that's some sort of claw-retractor as part of a Wolverine costume.
