When they put up their paywall, I stopped going, even though (I heard) they still had awesome content. They took down their paywall a few years ago, but I never noticed, because not clicking on any 'Salon' links just became second-nature to me.One word: ‘Salon’.

I suppose it could just be a stopgap, but it seems unlikely that they'd leave the current model and then turn back to it at some later date unless online consumption fell off the charts. Charging is arguably what the NYT should have maintained from the beginning. But it simply cannot move backwards effectively now.I agree.
